Beta Sitosterol

Natural Source of beta sitosterol:

There are many plant sources of beta-sitosterol, but the most important are wheat germ, rice bran, flax seeds, peanuts, soybeans, pumpkin seeds and corn oil. Diets high in fiber, soy and flax seed, can increase serum levels of beta-sitosterol.

Function in plant of beta sitosterol:

Beta sitosterol has been shown to be involved in the plant defense mechanism when they are invaded by pathogens (e.g. bacteria, virues, etc.)  Beta sitosterol is converted by an enzyme known as cytochrome P450 CYP710A1 via a C22 desaturation that forms stimasterol.  Stimasterol will reduce the expression of the pathogens defense regulator Flavin-dependent monoxygenase.  In summary, beta-sitosterol helps a plan protect itself against disease.

Health Benefits of beta sitosterol:

Cholesterol:  Beta-sitosterol has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and is widely used for this.  The mechanism appears to be that it will compete with cholesterol absorption in the digestive tract.  As a result, more beta-sitosterol is absorbed while less cholesterol is absorbed.

Antioxidant:  Beta sitosterol has antioxidant activity and has been shown to reduce DNA damage from free radicals as well as increase antioxidant enzymes.

Prostate:  Studies have shown that beta-sitosterol can reduce prostate enlargement.  Beta-sitosterol decreases post void urinary volume and increases urinary flow rate.
